Role
Visual design, research and analysis.
Debian is a widely-used, open-source operating system based on the Linux kernel. Known for its stability, security, and extensive software repository, Debian serves as the foundation for many other Linux distributions, including Ubuntu and Linux Mint. It follows a strict philosophy of free software, ensuring all components are open-source and adhere to the GNU Public License (GPL). Debian offers multiple branches, such as the stable, testing, and unstable releases, catering to different user needs. Its package management system, apt, makes it easy to install, update, and manage software. Debian is highly customizable and runs on various hardware platforms, making it a popular choice among developers, businesses, and enthusiasts alike.
Context
I started my journey with Debian after I first tried out Ubuntu, attracted by its user-friendly reputation and thrilled to receive a free CD. Even though I encountered obstacles like sound problems and game incompatibility, I found invaluable design tools like GIMP and Inkscape that became crucial for my creative endeavors. Fascinated by my tech friends' suggestions, I moved to Debian, discovering it less refined yet beneficial in its minimalistic style, which helped me develop problem-solving abilities and a sense of accountability in software management.
Currently, I utilize Debian in a homelab configuration with Nextcloud and additional platforms, along with Debian and Kali virtual machines for development on my Mac. While I haven't participated in numerous open-source projects, this experience has notably influenced my technical skills and enhanced my appreciation for what Linux can do.
While the Debian website caters to a technical audience, this redesign aims to improve the experience for newcomers. It's a way of giving back to the project that sparked my Linux journey. This work in progress serves as a springboard for anyone interested in implementing it.
Structure
Restructured information for a clear, top-down reading flow.
Navigation
Streamlined navigation through rearrangement and removal of unnecessary elements.
Visuals
Revamped all visual elements for enhanced clarity.
Language
Applied a consistent visual style that aligns with Debian's existing branding.
Conclusion
Debian's commitment to free and open source software truly resonates with me. It's more than just providing free access; it's about empowering users and fostering a collaborative development environment. This democratization of software is a beautiful thing, paving the way for a future where innovation thrives and everyone benefits.
I would love for this redesign to be considered and maybe even applied to every Debian web product.
